Christmas

Classes went on as usual these 2 days, but only half the class turned up.

On Christmas Day, AK walked into the classroom halfway through period 2 wearing a Santa suit, grabbing huge handfuls of chocolates from the huge blue bag on his shoulder and dropping them on everyone’s desks. It was awesome.^^

That night, AK held a potluck Christmas party at his house. I was a little late as I had calligraphy class (last lesson of the term), and so was going make baked potatoes at his place since it’s quick and easy, and he said he had an oven. After AK took me and a few others grocery shopping near his place, searching high and low for butter and cheese, we went back to his apartment and checked out his kitchen. Bending down to preheat the oven, I discovered that it wasn’t actually an oven but a huge dishwasher. OmG, what a laugh! All that running around and no baked potatoes...but Bazu brought potato salad, Danny brought a big tub of green salad, there was also chirashi-sushi, okonomiyaki, kimchi pancakes, jiaozi (or gyoza), KFC & dessert so there was plenty to eat. We had a photo session, exchanged gifts (I got a cactus in an adorable piggy pot ^o^), then K & I left to get back to the dorm in time for a hot shower while the others stayed and played cards. It was a great time.^^

In celebration of AK’s 22nd birthday today, we went for pizza last night (as opposed to tonight coz we’re all diligent students and want to be awake for morning class tomorrow^^) and stayed out till after midnight. First we went bowling. Well actually, they went bowling. I went back to the dorm with K as she wasn’t feeling well and joined them for karaoke later on. We sang for about 3 and a half hours altogether, cutting cake at the stroke of midnight. Everyone looked liked happy, AK especially, which was great.

Tonight, I just had dinner at the cafeteria with a few classmates and K & some of her classmates then went back to my room, and did laundry and homework for tomorrow. We only have a week of classes left, and the teachers are rushing through all the material…too fast for my brain to process, and too much homework!

MERRY CHRISTMAS! o(^-^)/

A week of sunshine^^

Comprehensive Chinese teacher (left) & classmates
My friend gave me a miniature mandarin...isn't it cute?!^^

I’ve signed up for a 5 day tour (actually 3 days) to Xi’an with Aa, S & 2 of their classmates. We leave by train early tomorrow evening, and get back to BJ on Tuesday morning. I’ll tell you all about it when I get back.^^

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
今日の日本語コーナーは楽しかったです。日本歌を中国語に翻訳するゲームをして、勉強になりました。難しくて、全くできなかったです。(>.<) 来週は中国の歌を日本語に訳すようです。どうかな?^^
日本語コーナーで日本人のMさんと中国人のZ先生話しました。ほとんど、政治や歴史についての話でした。分かった部分は半分しかないかもしれません。(>.<;) 50代のMさんは一人で51ヶ国も行きました。しかも、日本語以外に英語、スペイン語、そして中国語が話せます。本当に尊敬します。ある韓国人は20代前半で母国語以外、日本語も英語も中国語もほとんどぺらぺらです。すごいでしょう。始めて会ったとき、日本人か韓国人か本当に分からなかったです。ここへ来てるみなさんは、こんな熱心満々、素晴らしい人ばかりです。私は何に熱心ですかね。まあ、とりあえずもっと真剣に色々勉強しないとね。^^
でも、明日から5日間(実は3日間しかないが...)、AaとSと彼らのクラスメイト2人と西安に行きます。夕方出発して、北京へ帰るのは火曜日の朝です。往き返りは電車で、現場での交通方法はツアーバス。まあ、帰ってきてから写真などをアップロードします。以前、一人旅行でも楽しいと思いましたが、今はやはり友達や家族と一緒に行くほうが楽しいと思います。一人でならどこでも行く気がならなくなってきました。何でだろうね。^^
Mondays never felt so good (^o^)/
Much like every other day, I awoke to the sound of my mobile phone ringing this morning. Thinking it was the alarm, I hit the snooze button without hesitation. But then it rang again. This time I looked at the display: Incoming call……it was my good old high school buddy whom I haven’t seen in 2 years! It was such a nice surprise. Though we only spoke for a short while, it made my day. Thanks buddy!^^
We had a cool substitute teacher for speaking class this afternoon who is much better than our usual teacher in many ways. She had everyone’s attention for the whole 2 hours.
In calligraphy class, we practised writing our own name. I’m always so exhausted, not to mention hungry, after 4 hours of language classes that I can’t concentrate in calligraphy class. The teacher actually looked at and commented on my writing today.
Just in case you can't tell, the writing on the white paper was done by my teacher. The writing on the yellow paper is my work.
Calligraphy teacher, his work (to be displayed in an exhibition) & me
今朝、いつも通り携帯電話の鳴る音で目が覚ましました。いつも通り、スヌーズボタンを押して、また寝ようとしたら携帯がまた鳴りました。ディスプレーを見たら「Incoming call」が表示されました。二年も話してない中学校からの親友が電話かけてきました!ちょっとしか話していなかったが、とても懐かしくて、うれしかったです。ありがとう!^^
今日、書道の授業でみんな自分の名前の書き方を練習しました。4時間の授業後、いつも疲れていて、おなかが空いていて、あまり集中できないのです。講座が開始された以来、先生は今日始めて私の書いたものを見て、ほめてくれました。
Cold winter days
I stayed in pretty much all last week, including the weekend. Going out into the cold requires a lot of motivation! I left the school grounds just 3 times: to Tafi (the best Italian restaurant in town) for some yummy pasta on Thursday night, to Wudaokou markets on Friday afternoon, and to sushi train yesterday.
Yesterday, I slept in til noon, went out for sushi with KT and worked on my CV the rest of the time. Today was pretty much the same, except that I woke up early enough for breakfast, had noodles for lunch at Zijing cafeteria (the soup didn’t smell so good; not coz it had gone bad…I think they used lamb soup), had dinner at the cafeteria in the building next door and was working on a translation & a stack load of homework. It doesn’t sound like much, does it? My problem is that I take too long doing one single thing...
For last week's “speaking” assignment, we interviewed the ThU Green Society about their used paper collecting campaign and I’m in charge of putting together our findings for our presentation on Tuesday. What do you think?
The TGS organise one paper-collection day a fortnight. They give out small prizes in exchange for unwanted books, newspaper, magazines, cardboard and the like, which they then “sell” to recycled-paper factories for a small amount of money. Well, it’s a start. BJ would be such a nicer place to live in if only people didn’t leave a trail of rubbish behind them wherever they go, spit and blow their nose on the street…
Temperature hit 0'C!!
This week’s topic for newspaper reading class is “alcohol”. Although published 10 years ago, one paragraph particularly caught my attention. According to that newspaper article, each year over 6 million and 13.5 million tonnes of grain/cereal is used to produce alcohol and spirits/sake respectively. This amount is equivalent to the annual grain consumption of 30 million people. Need I say more?
By the way, we got our final test paper back today...I got 95! (^o^)/
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Back in business

No I haven’t disappeared off the face of the earth. All blogger sites were mysteriously blocked for the past few weeks and, just as mysteriously, unblocked. Apparently the same thing happened to wikipedia and hotmail. To all those who religiously checked my blog nonetheless, thank you for thinking of me!^^

Being cut off might’ve been a good thing though – I had mid-term exams in the first week of November. In the 3 tests we got back, I got over 90%...woohoo!

Hmm…what else have I been up to? Class dinner with teachers last Friday then a friend’s birthday drinks afterwards. As for sightseeing, I went to check out Yuan Ming Yuan on Saturday, Beijing Uni campus last, last weekend and Fragrance Hill Park the week before that. Ooh, and I went for yumcha (in novotel) – not bad. Their custard bun was delish! =P

Today’s 3 characters in calligraphy class. I just can’t seem to get the evenness and positioning right.
By the way, is anyone having problems viewing this site? I can post entries but can't actually view the website. Strange...

Peacocks on campus?!

To make the most of today’s beautiful weather, KT & I went exploring around campus and discovered that our uni keeps peacocks?! I’ve uploaded some more photos to the Uni folder.

Field trip #2: Mang Shan National Park and apple-picking

It was hard to get up before 8am this morning after last night’s class party #2 which ended after midnight. Only 5 class members made it to dinner (Korean bbq) but 3 more people joined us later in the evening. We had planned on going bowling but there were no lanes available. So we went to karaoke again. This time, we stayed for 2 hours.

Anyway, back to yesterday’s field trip…about 70 people signed up (2 buses). First we stopped by the Tianchi (天池) Apple Orchard. We had 30 minutes to pick (or eat) as many apples as we could – up to 5kg. I picked enough to give one to each of my classmates and teachers with a few left for me. I ate one fresh off the tree – unbelievably crunchy and juicy…a hundred times tastier than apples bought from the supermarket!

After we each picked our share of apples, we headed off to the nearby national park.

We had about 2 hours to spend at the national park, but after checking out the big Buddha and statues of the 12 zodiac animals didn’t leave us much time to walk up to the tower at the top of the mountain. It was perfect weather for a bushwalk. Though the actual “bushwalk” was a little different to what I expected. The path through the bush was paved, with steps along the steeper sections. It’s no wonder they make people pay an entrance fee. It’s a pity that the washroom was in the shocking state it was in. Anyway, I think were about halfway up when we stopped to rest. But by then it was time to make our way back to the bus.

The third and final stop for the day was the reservoir just outside the national park entrance. There was not much to see, but the scenery was quite nice. The mega long flying fox looked exciting but there was not one customer the entire time we were there. I wonder if it’s still in operation…

There was a bit of a traffic jam so it took a bit longer to get back to uni but we arrived by late afternoon. For dinner, we (KT, AL & I) tried out a new eatery between Zijing dormitory buildings 18 & 19 – it had pretty classy interior and the food was quite tasty, though still much too oily. We actually had to pay for the hygienically packaged disposable chopsticks and hand towel. Perhaps we should bring our own next time…

Brrr...cold...

It's suddenly become so cold! People were wearing big coats, gloves, etc. today. I'm wearing my big coat in my room coz it's just about as cold as it is outside. I heard that the heating won't be switched on until mid-November. The water took particularly long to get hot tonight...I had it on max. but it was still only just warm by the time I was done. Not looking forward to winter...

Each "newspaper" class, one person does a presentation on a news story from the newspaper or from the TV. Yesterday was my turn. My first presentation in Mandarin. I thought I'd become somewhat accustomed to speaking in front of people after so much practise in Kagawa, but not much has changed. I don't think I'll ever not be nervous when speaking in front of people. >_<
Anyway, I chose to do a newspaper article about Gunther's "Worldprocessor," a selection of which were exhibited in
Beijing this year. Gunther attempts to use globes to show such statistics as TV ownership, arable land, refugee currents and more. Very interesting.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
さむい~~!室内の温度は外とあまり変わらなく、寒いです。寮の暖房がつくのは11月中旬だそうです。お湯をいっぱいに出しても、十分に熱くならないし...今日だけかな?そうならいいんだけど...
この頃、なんかすごく疲れやすいです。寒くなってきたからかな?頭を使いすぎてるからかな?^^
先週から、毎回"新聞購読"の授業に、1人は自分が事前に選択したニュー ス、新聞記事について、クラスに発表します。昨日は私の番でした。中国語で発表するのが初めてで、ものすごく緊張しました!香川で、よく人前で話してい て、少しでも慣れてきたと思っていたけど、一生なれないことだなぁと思います。>_< 私が選んだ新聞記事は、ドイツ人のGuntherが1988年に始めた“Worldprocessor” というプロジェクトについてです。人々が統計データを一目で了解できるために、Guntherは「地球」を使って世界の色んな統計を表示しました。例え ば、テレビ所有、耕作適地、難民の流れ、など。今年、北京で展示会が開かれたので新聞に載せたのです。本当に面白くて、びっくりさせます。^^
Class Outing^^
Yesterday after class, we all went for dinner and then for an hour of karaoke (minus 3 ppl)...English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean songs! We got a huge room which had a small stage/dance area. Towards the end, everyone got up and danced. It was great fun.^^
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Japanese Students' Association Welcome Party

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
今夜、日本人留学生会の歓迎会に行きました。私は一体何人でしょうね。とにかく、今は日本語モードです!^^
大きい、丸いテーブルが9~10あって、席はくじで決まりました。全部で約100人が出席したと思います。私のテーブルは11人いて、女性が3人ばかりでした。関東地方出身の方がやはり多かったですね。
色々なゲームを用意してくれて、面白かったです。うちのテーブルは一つのゲームを勝って、大きなチョコレート・ケーキをもらっちゃいました!その場で、みんなで食べました。;P
久しぶりに日本人に囲まれ、長い間日本語で喋って、懐かしかったです。中華料理のレストランでなかったら、日本にいるって感じでした。
日本語を忘れないように、上手にもなるように、木曜日の「日本語コーナー」も参加しようかな。。。^^
No water!!!!
We’ve had no water supply since about 11:30pm last night coz there’s something wrong with the water tanks Apparently this happens at least 2-3 times a year. Well, I just hope that it’s fixed by tonight!
Going to the Japanese Students’ Association gathering tonight. I heard that about 100 people are expected to attend. I wonder how they’re going to seat everyone…
Electives
Ahhh!!! 55 words to memorise for dictation tomorrow morning!!
Elective classes have started this week. There’s Taichi, Erhu, Chinese Painting, Chinese Calligraphy, Business Chinese, Chinese Pronunciation, Martial Arts, An Introduction to Chinese Film...
I went to Calligraphy on Monday. The teacher is a 70-year-old man who claims that studying Chinese calligraphy is good for one’s health and actually helps one live longer. Hmmm…
Tonight I went to Business Chinese. It’s more like “Chinese Business” than “Business Chinese.” I know, I could just learn about Chinese corporations on my own, but the likelihood of that ever happening would be rather slim.^^; Plus, it’s interesting to listen to a local’s perspective.
The teacher actually graduated with a teaching degree (Chinese as a second language) from BLCU, then went on to study law at Tsinghua. He lectured as if he was telling a story, making what would probably be considered a dull class to most surprisingly interesting.
Which should I take?? Maybe I’ll take both…^^
Foreign Students' Dormitories
My building (#21) is the second one from the right
View from 6F...
...between the buildings
I like my new souvenir mug.^^
Tsinghua Tour
It was yet another beautiful warm, fine day (if a little smoggy), so I thought I’d go exploring around campus (the green patches on the left-hand-side on the map). Let me just say one thing…it is huge! (By the way, my dorm is in the top-left corner on the map.)
There’s a little canal lined with graceful willow trees on either side, which flows from the north, down the centre and to the west of campus. In the west, there’s also a Chinese garden with traditional-style buildings and corridors which brings you back in time. If there weren’t so many tourists, sitting by the small lake would be quite peaceful and relaxing…a great spot to sit with a good book, or just relax and enjoy the picturesque scenery. There are landscaped rock formations (just like the ones you often see in Chinese paintings…very “Chinesey”), including a waterfall. I’ll hold off saying anything about the state of the water, but I’d like to come again when the water lilies are in bloom. You’d never think you were on a university campus. It’s kinda amazing that a university would actually be included as a tourist attraction on a group tour.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Actually, the newspaper class isn’t so bad. We started off really slow, doing just 2-3 paragraphs per lesson. The pace has picked up slightly but still manageable. And teacher doesn’t expect us to understand the newspaper articles in too much detail which is good. Since the textbook is quite old, the teacher prepares additional, more recent, related material for us. I quite like this teacher. She’s well prepared and knows what she’s doing.^^

The material for the Comprehensive Chinese class is actually quite difficult as well, but the pace is also quite slow, and Wang laoshi is a good teacher (our class’ one and only male teacher). I like him too. He uses flash cards and interesting examples to help us remember new vocab and how to use them.^^

Well, I'd better get started on homework. :P
